Marketing that will change your business | Chapter One

“We are taking time off awaiting baby Gray, but have put together our favorite Tips and Tricks from the last two years for us all to review!” Tuesday Tips REVISITED…As promised we are going to start taking some of our Tuesday Tips and Tricks posts and talk about something FAR more important than the technical aspects of photography, the evil B word (Business)! Most photographers got into photography because they LOVE photography, not the business side! Isn’t that why you started? Most of us hate the 9-5 grind mentality (even though we end up working more than most people with a day job) and we want to be free from all the things that we don’t love doing. Unfortunately, as most of us have found out, if you don’t have a solid business underneath your amazing art, then you are doomed to be broke and frustrated with this thing called full-time photography and even worse, 9 out of 10 of us will end up going out of business within 10 years.* Not cool! So, what is the remedy? The solution to this problem is to fall in love with running a great business as much as you do with your art and shooting. The two don’t have to be that much different, because if you want your clients to have an amazing experience when they finally see the photos you created for them (which all of us do), then why not have every aspect of your business do that? We can make our entire business a great experience for our clients and it can be fun and creative and... Read More

Making Money | The Culture of Earning

Welcome to week 1 of this 3 week series on how to make more money in your business + a sweet GIVEAWAY. Today we will cover the first and most important aspect of becoming great at anything you set out to do – culture immersion. Generating money requires complete devotion and dedication to earning.  Think back to when you first became a photographer. You somehow got the itch, started checking out cameras and blogs and before you knew it, you were in deep! When I (Zach) started shooting back in 2006, I got into photography almost overnight. I wanted to learn so bad that I pushed an A&R guy from Provident records to get me on the assistant list of the best commercial shooters in town and went out for free and carried gear bags just to see them shoot. I went to the library and read loads of books on lighting and shooting techniques, I poured over dozens of blogs, websites, YouTube videos and started making friends that were shooters with whom I spent hours talking shop about cameras and lenses, I spent hundreds and probably even thousands of hours learning, shooting and soaking it all up. The result? Jody and I had photographers asking us to teach photography just 1 year into running our business. It seams like maybe that was premature for us to start teaching since we had only been “shooting” for a year, but the reality was that we had spent so much time previous to that learning and becoming good at what we did, we really were ready to start teaching. We were immersed in... Read More

Going After Your Dreams | Business Book Review

We want to highlight one of the latest business books that we recently finished (thanks to the #15minutechallenge – join us in this!) and how you can take that and apply it to your photography brand right now.  Today we want to feature  The Go-Getter by Peter B. Kyne.   Excerpt from the back cover: ‘Do you want to be the one who lands the job? Who gets the promotion? Whose dream becomes a reality? STOP WANTING. START WINNING Dave Ramsey says, “No Matter how many times they fall or fail, go-getters get back up and keep moving towards their goals” No wonder Dave gives this book to every person on his team!’ This book was a quick read and quite a few different lessons are in this story. The one I want to highlight today is NEVER GIVE UP! One of the characters in this short story is given a task and he runs into every possible obstacle possible. What’s amazing about what he does is he doesn’t stop. He doesn’t abandon his task. Because of that he WINS! His dreams and goals are accomplished! How many times do you feel like giving up? How many times has someone told you that your dreams are impossible? How many times have you gotten the door shut in your face? How many times has someone told you, “Your prices are too high. You’re not worth it.”? How many times __________________ (you fill in the blank)… There are stories after stories of musicians, restaurateurs, businessmen & women, politians that faced all obstacles and never gave up. “Being a go-getting means, at... Cows Never Win

80% of what we do day in and day out to become successful is business – and with 20% of our time we get to create art (shooting, editing etc). So this week, and a few time a month our business posts are dedicated to this all important area of our photog biz!   Today’s tip is entitled, “Don’t be a cow.” Cows love the status quo, they love chewing their cud and keeping their heads down. They have no idea when they walk into the slaughter house what’s about to happen to them. That is the opposite of what you need to do to be a success in anything in life, including your photography business. The alternative is to become a Rhino. Scott Alexander, in his book Rhinoceros Success, calls Rhino’s “large, focused, 6,000 pound charging machines that stop at nothing to get what they want!” They don’t stand for the status quo, they live in the wild and live free unlike their cow counterparts. So why do Rhino’s succeed and cows just get by? Because they are driven.   The Challenge So our challenge today is, where is your drive? What is your focus? Where are you going? Do you even know? If you don’t feel driven, don’t have direction and don’t know where you are going, here are three areas you can work on that could change that for you starting right now!   We become the product of three things: the people we associate with, the books we read, and the media we listen to. (Tweet this out HERE!)    Want to become a Rhino (someone... Read More

Think & Grow Rich… is it really that simple?

I wanna be a billionaire, so freakin’ bad… Anyone else? ;) I (Jody) love the song, “Billionaire.” The lyrics often get stuck in my head… And is that such a bad thing to want? What’s the point of having $$? We love what Dave Ramsey (the smartest man on business and finances we know). He says money is good for three things – saving, spending, and giving. I love that! Ever since we came across Dave Ramsey, almost 7 years ago we have followed that idea as well as his financial principles. We’re always eager to learn more about how we manage our money better, and of course, grow it! (Not sure where to start with your finances? Try reading Total Money Makeover by DR). I recently picked up a book, Think and Grow Rich, thanks to the high recommendations from a friend of ours. Our friend read it, applied the principles, and a year later, made $1,000,000. Um, if that doesn’t get my attention I don’t know what else will! I started the book on vacation and am about a third of the way through. It’s really good stuff so far and I wanted to share the biggest thing that has struck me so far. The battle for your success will first start in your mind. Yup, read that again and soak it in… then move onto these quotes from Think and Grow Rich.   “…no more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty” (p. 22). “Both poverty and riches are the offspring of... Business by the Book

This Tuesday tips and tricks blog is all about what we love the most… business! As much as I (Zach) love shooting cool images and working with our couple’s on the wedding day, those that know me will tell you that when we get on the topic of business, I get really excited! Jody and I both came from having absolutely nothing handed to us, to building a business that does what we want it to and blesses us each and every day. So, today’s tip is going to be on the topic of where you want to be in five years and how to get there. The year we got into photography we also became huge fans of a great financial adviser who hails from Nashville (and also happens to be a multi-millionaire)  named Dave Ramsey. One thing that I heard Dave quote all the time, and which is the basis of this post, is that “where you will be in five years is dependent on two things, the people you meet and the books you read.” That quote has stuck with me over the years and is one of the major factors in the success of our business. The average millionaire reads one business book a month, and I want to think like they do, so Jody and I have become huge readers (which is something I have to force myself to do) of great business books. Every time I pick up a new business book and start reading, my mind starts racing with new ideas and different and better ways to run our business. We get... Read More
