Nashville IN-CAMERA Light Recap | October 2012

The final Nashville IN-CAMERA: Light workshop is over and we are glad about how awesome the day was, but sad that it is over! :( We had an amazing time with our attendees and can’t wait to reveal what we are going to do next! Stay tuned! For now, check out the images and some behind the scenes from the day! We started off shooting in the worst lighting conditions there are. Direct sun in the face! We overpowered it with the flash and got the below image. In this before and after you can see the flash shot to the left, and the natural light to the right and what a difference it makes having great, soft lighting. Check our advanced off-camera lighting section of the learn page to see how we created this shot!  Here is the crew! Thanks guys for coming out and rockin some off-camera lighting with us! If your interested in attending one of the last few in-camera workshops that we are ever going to hold and learn how to shoot like this (Kansas City & Orlando are remaining), we still have a FEW seats available! Use the code “YAYimGOING” to get $150 off any seat! Put your code in HERE!... Read More

Published in PPA Magazine!

Ah, and now it’s time to brag on my husband!!!!!!!!! PPA Magazine (Professional Photographers of America) holds a cover image contest for one of its issues every year.  A few months ago we were contacted by them saying that an image Zach submitted of his made it to the top 100…which was really exciting because there were more than 4,600 entries entered of photographers vying for a spot in the magazine spread. Then we found out more recently Zach made it to the top 15 and was going to be published amongst the winners!!  We were (and are) pretty pumped and if you look through the November issue you’ll see his image among the other finalists and winner (who is also from Nashville!)! Here is the magazine cover shot (by Mama Shan of Nashville, TN!). Here is Zach’s image from the magazine spread (sorry for the low res!). And here is the shot that Zach took way back in early 2008 of the amazingly awesome Casey and Carmen! Way to go babe!! Enjoy the goodness! (Thanks to those who offered to send your copy of the magazine to us!  We appreciate... Read More

Ronald McDonald House Elephant Cake Shoot

“Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. It’s a long time to be away from home, or to divide a family. Ronald McDonald Houses around the world offer families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital, and be comfortable and cared for during their stay.” – Ronald McDonald Website Jody and I were asked to shoot a special cake recently that was donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Nashville by the amazing Amy Richardson from The Bake Shoppe! The cake was for the kids for their Halloween party and it was a big hit! The cake was inspired by a cool gift card that the girls at the Bake Shop had seen and decided they could do a cake to match. It looked amazing and we came down and took some shots of the cake and the kids and staff and had a ton of fun!! Check out the cake shots below!! Here is the card that inspired the cake! If you want more info on the Ronald McDonald House charity and what they do, visit their website ... Read More

PartnerCon 2009 Reflections: Part III – Uh, models, wha??

Partner Con 2009 was amazing and there were so many different components that came together to make it a rockin’ weekend! Something great about PartnerCon is that there are not only speaking sessions but there are actually workshops!  They filled up so fast this year that they added even MORE workshops and our friends Jeff & Erin Youngren from San Diego, CA stepped up and met the need.  Their workshop filled up in like 30 seconds and a little bit later we got an email from them asking if we would um, be their subjects – wedding attire and all!!!!!  We agreed and were even more pumped about it because we don’t have that many modern shots of us in wedding gear!  So we were excited about getting some nice shots of us as bride and groom… four years later… Here are a few that have surfaced so far! Image by Jeff & Erin Youngren, workshop leaders. (Ok so after we created this post tons more images popped up, and as I, Jody, type I’m in MN sitting at a dial up computer – who would of thought people still have dial up? – and we have some more KICK BOOTY images to show, but alas, the connection is taking forever for us to put more up… To see more images that the workshop leaders themselves took you’ll have to mosey on over to their Blog!!!) New York City and Back Again! We Survived!

Jody and I just got back from our first trip as husband and wife to New York City! Jody had been there twice before, but I had never been. We came out to go to the PDN Photo Plus Expo which is one of the largest photography expo’s in the world with over 27,000 in attendance. The show was awesome and Jody and I were asked to speak at the Westcott booth about lighting (which was really cool!). We got to hang with the whole crew from Westcott for dinner and meet the Owner, Vice President Kelly Mondora and hang with the amazing sales team John and David. There was also another Westcott Pro there who was teaching about lighting and has been working with Westcott for the last 23 years, Jim. Thanks to ALLLLLLL of you for sending us suggestions of things to do while in NYC!  Sadly, our visiting time there was really short, and we left the list of everyone’s suggestions of what to do on the bus right before we got dropped off at Times Square… *sighs*  We have decided that we need to make another trip and do all of the cool ideas that were mentioned!  Because we were not really able to do any of the suggestions, we still have a prize to give! We will be announcing the winner of the “Tell us what to do in New York” this Friday, so stay tuned!! You are not going to believe how awesome the prize is!!  :) Jody and I also got to explore the city and high on my to-do list was... Read More

A Nashville, TN Family Portrait Session

We had the privilege of shooting an amazing session for the Boonstra family this past Saturday and had an absolute blast! When we shoot sessions like this we really like to get to know the family (Sandy, husband Jerry and their two amazing kids Luke and Jackson) as best we can so that we can be sure to incorporate their personalities into the shoot. So to do that, we went and spent some time with the Boonstras a few days prior to the shoot just getting to know them a bit. We found out that their oldest son, Jackson, loves to play soccer (and is super good at it!) and has been playing since he was 3. The youngest son, Luke (aka Rock Star) also plays soccer, but loves to play the guitar as well. So we  really incorporated those things that they all love into the shoot and came away with some great images of the whole family! First up is Luke. We decided to shoot some edgy photos of him with his suh-weet Gretsch electric guitar! This is a cool detail shot of Luke holding his dad’s 60’s Gibson acoustic. What a sweet guitar! I am so jealous!! We can’t forget to include Boo the dog! This is me showing Luke some of the shots that we were taking. It is always good to let them know that the pics are not lame-o (as most kids his age would assume:))! Here is Jackson in action! Too bad these guys aren’t seniors.  These could be their senior portraits! Next up is Jerry the dad. His dedication to his boys... Read More

Nashville Scene 20th Anniversary Shoot

Jody and I had the privilege of shooting the 20th anniversary party for the Nashville Scene/NFocus magazines. It was a really fun night filled with fun and frivolity and we met a ton of super cool “who’s who” folks in Nashville! The event was sponsored by some different companies in town that you will see in some of the detail shots and was held at the awesome venue One Eleven. It is really cool that we have been asked to take part in events like this and hope to continue to do more of them in the future! Enjoy the pics! Thanks to Mike, Carla, Megan, Evan, and the rest of the fantabulous Nashville Scene team and sponsors who put on this grrrrrreat and happening ... Read More

Published! TN Titan Celebrity Wedding in Southern Bride Magazine

First, we had the honor of shooting the wedding of Tennessee Titan Reynaldo  Hill and his lovely bride, Janina (ah, what a sweet couple they are) and now we have the privileged of having our images published in Southern Bride magazine! Their winter wedding at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN was absolutely beautiful with pink hues all throughout and they paid special attention to detail.  This wedding was fantastic to shoot and could not have been done without the plenty of vendors who came together to pull it off (for a list of these highly esteemed vendors, see the end of this post). If you would like to view some of their engagement images, follow this link to their Featured Engagement post, and to view a highlight from their wedding day via slideshow click here. The Superb Vendors Who Made The Magic Happen: The bride & groom photos that you see were taken at the hot Las Vegas style nightclub – F– USE when we were granted private access. This wedding was coordinated by Courtney Hammons and her team from A Magical Affair and was held at Opryland Hotel. All of the paper that you see (invitations, menus, programs, seating cards, etc) was custom created by the great Donette & Steve with Designs In Paper. The cool Jen with Reveal Event Style was a huge part in planning the stunning decor. Flowers were provided by A Village of Flowers. Linens provided by Liz of Connie Duglin Linen. Published! Her Nashville!

This month we have the privileged of once again being published in Nashville’s coolest women’s magazine – Her Nashville. The above image is from one of our Nashville weddings and this shot was taken at the Marriott West End, in Nashville, TN. I’m telling you, that magazine is addicting! We love the look of it, the newer slick pages they have, and get this folks – the ads are so non-boring looking that I (Jody) actually look over them instead of avoid them like the plague! They have great articles and writers, and it’s just an enjoyable magazine all around. Now onto the pictures!! Her Nashville featured the wedding of the lovely Lee & Elisabeth Cunningham. The Willy Wonka (Schakolad) Chocolate Factory

Are you needing some Valentines Day goodness for your special someone? Well look no further! Zach and I experienced the joy and delight of Schakolad Chocolate Factory today, and we now can say we have lived life to the fullest ;o) This place has everything you can imagine when it comes to chocolate – chocolate records, chess boards, soccer balls, and yes, even chocolate handcuffs and body paint. Finished and ready to eat!! I (Jody) ate one of the dark chocolate dipped cherries and they were sooooo good! There were so many different... Read More

Hand Made Jewelry = Sweet Wedding Accessories!

We just did a shoot for the super cool ladies over at Adornments at the Factory in Franklin. These gals are a mother and two daughters and they have a brand new studio located on the second floor. They make all of their jewelry, paintings and drawings themselves and can also do custom designed pieces for your wedding event – including very unique invitations. When you open up those top notch bridal magazines and see these great shots of so-and-so wearing these gorgeous wedding gowns and shoes, it seems like they are always wearing some hand-made custom piece of jewelry that is awesome and that is exactly the kind of stuff that these ladies make! Their stuff is beyond unique and would make a killer addition to you and your bridesmaids look for the wedding day. This stuff would also make a great gift for important people who were/are involved in your wedding. These gals started their company to allow them, as well as other artists, to live the dream of making a living doing their own art. For more background on these gals, continue reading at the bottom! Second shooting can be fun!

These last few days have been a whirlwind! Not only have we been busily preparing for our Bridal Portraiture Workshop tomorrow, but on Thursday we drove all the way to Chattanooga, TN to hear a photographer speak, and then yesterday (Friday) we were busy organizing our office (yours truly) and also shooting (Zach)! We had the privilege of helping out some good friends of ours over at Dove Wedding Photography. The dynamic duo is Peter and Whitney Carlson and they have become friends through a once-a-month photo geek meeting that we have called PUGs (Pictage User Groups). We get together, talk shop, then go out to dinner and comment on how nerdy we all are with photo stuff! Their client’s wedding took place in Franklin at the Factory, which is also where we are hosting our photography workshop tomorrow. Here are some of the images that Zach took from the day! Enjoy! Here is Whitney in Spy Mode… Peter getting his photo... Read More
