    DESTIN, FL

    VANCOUVER, CANADA

    NEW YORK, NY

It’s great to learn and better your photography, hang out and meet new photographers, but what if we told you that by attending our workshops YOU could actually make a difference in someone else’s life?

For those of you who may not be aware, since 2011 we have partnered our workshops with  Thirst Relief International.

Thirst Relief was started by a photographer, Jim Davis Hicks, who simply has a passion to help those that need help the most. Those who don’t have something as simple as clean water. One of the biggest causes of disease and death in third world countries, especially among children, is water-born illness. Children in these countries drink unclean water, get sick, and their fragile bodies can’t fight it off. Jim Davis realized that he could do something about this problem by bringing in sand filters that are easy to maintain by the locals and easy to use, and thus was born Thirst Relief. Every filter can last for up to 25 years and can help a community live longer lives by having clean water to drink, and they have now helped thousands around the world fix this problem! How cool is that?!

As we have been out speaking and meeting so many amazing photographers around the country, we have been asking the question, “do you want your life to be about something bigger than yourself?” And we have heard a resounding YES; all of us do!! We want our lives to impact others and help others. Nothing in life is more fulfilling than when you take your resources and help those that can’t help themselves. That can be anything from an encouraging word, loving someone who is hard to love, helping someone get treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, or simply giving a cup of clean water to a dying child. So, we ask you again. Do you want your life to be about something bigger than yourself? It can be!

One way that we are getting involved is through a brand new initiative from Thirst Relief called PLUS ONE.

Here is how it works. We have opened up one extra seat in all of our workshops that are the PLUS ONE Seats. If we sell all 16 seats for the workshop, then that final 16th seat is donated directly to Thirst Relief! It takes exactly $5 to give one person clean water for 25 years, and every time we sell that PLUS ONE seat we give $600 directly to Thirst Relief which in turn can help 120 children get the clean water they need! So, no matter what seat you may buy to one of our workshops, you are getting us closer to the goal of helping someone else!

This workshop tour has the potential to give almost TWO THOUSAND people (1,917 to be exact :) clean water for LIFE!  Be a part of the change that you want to see in the world!

IN-CAMERA: Light Photography Workshop | London, UK Re-Cap!

Today is the re-cap on the London, UK Light workshop! The sold-out class started off at Sim2000 Imaging where we talked through theory and how to get the look that you want with a strobe with zero guess work and how to do it fast. Afterwards we headed straight out for 3 hours of shooting to learn the process together.

We always tell our attendees that these shoots are not intended for portfolio use and we are not here to just take cool shots and not really learn anything, but instead to learn the system that we use to get the lighting the way you want it and go through the motions over and over again until you have it nailed! Then, when you head out to do your own shoot you know the technical side of things really well, and can then be creative with your posing and compositions.

Thanks to Gisela for the behind the scenes images! You rock!!

Here we did a two light set-up and showed the attendees just how easy it is to add another light to your shots for extra drama!

You can really see the before and after difference here with the set up on the left and the lit shot on the right. Love it!

As the sun finally went down we headed out to this nearby field for a few more shots of the warm sunset. We got some really dramatic skies and are glad we stuck it out even though it was starting to get really chilly!

The shot on the right above was shot through some grass that was maybe 8 or 10 inches long. We used the 16-35L at 16mm to get that super dramatic look and it turned out really cool. We also pointed the strobe so that it hit our subject and the ground in order to get some texture and definition in the grass and not just be a black blob at the bottom of the shot.

Thanks to everyone that came out! We had such an amazing time hanging with you all and can’t wait to come back again soon! We may be headed  over to Sweden next time as we have some new friends over there, so who knows where we go head next!

IN-CAMERA: Shooting & Post Workshop Recap | London, UK

We just got back from the UK in London and had an amazing time hanging out with all the amazing photographers that we have come to know and love! We did an awesome speaking gig sponsored by ShutterRock Stomp and then had 3 days of workshops that weekend. We had shooters come in from all over including London, Austria, Sweden and even two awesome photogs from North Carolina! Today we are checking out some of the images and behind the scenes from the Shooting & Post workshop that we did at this really cool industrial park outside of London in Hatfield.

We also had one of the attendees do a legit review on London’s Photo Night Live and if you want to check that out, you can HERE.

All images were shot in-camera with minor post-processing in Adobe Lightroom. No color or action enhancements of any kind. Check out the images below!!

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 50 – 1.2 – 1/500th second

This first image was done in front of a metal building that had some really harsh and direct sunlight on it. The sun was coming onto the scene in a descent direction, but was way to harsh as it was still early in the afternoon. So we diffused the light and added a small reflector under our awesome models chin, and once the exposure on her face came down from the diffusion, the background got totally blown out and it looked like we were shooting in the studio. Pretty cool! You can see in the behind the scenes images below how we did it.

    50 1.4 lens at ISO 100 1.8 – 1/800th second

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 50 – 1.2 – 1/500th second

Here you can see the Jodster doing a great backlit shot and showing the attendees how to get awesome flair in your shots, while also having some great light on the front of them.

    50 1.4 lens at ISO 100 – 1.8 – 1/1250th second

We found this awesome little spot where the direct sun was getting forced into this space between the buildings, and once we added a little fill light from our reflector, we were able to get a really awesome shot with lots of dynamic light!

    50 1.4 lens at ISO 100 – 1.4 – 1/2500th second

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 50 1.2 – 1/400th second

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 50 1.2 – 1/400th second

As the sun began to get lower in the horizon and come in at the correct angle, we decided to the unthinkable. Shoot in direct sun! Gasp! We showed the attendees how to position your subject so that the direct sun would flatter them the best and ended up getting some really great, crisp images in this light.

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 50 – 2.0 – 1/600th second

    50 1.4 lens at ISO 100 – 1.6 – 1/640th second

    85L 1.2 lens at ISO 200 – 1.2 – 1/500th second

This last set up was all natural light with just a touch of fill from our reflector to smooth it out. We had a beautiful sunset (something rarely seen in the UK in November!) and the light was just buttery. We used the trees to add some nice texture to our images and ended the shoot here.

We ended the day going through our entire post-production process demonstrating how we can import, cull, edit, pick album images and be totally done with all post in less than 5 hours!

What a great crew and thanks to the attendees who came out to hang with us! We miss you guys already!!
